| Descriere a Estate | Château Cantemerle : This property of 90 hectares is located in Macau-en-Médoc, and has, therefore, the appellation Haut-Médoc. The history of this castle began in the Middle Ages with the barony of Cantemerle, who owned fiefdoms and noble parishes. The Lords of Blanquefort, then the Villeneuve Durfort, and then the family Dubos had succeeded at the head of the field. Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort did an enormous work for the recognition of her château. Indeed, brokers, having established the ranking of 1855, had forgotten the château Cantemerle because they had no history of the resale price of this wine. Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort reacted by giving, to the Brokers Syndicate, a file containing the sale price of the wine of Château Cantemerle since the early nineteenth century. As it was sold at an higher price than the last wine of the classification (château Croizet-Bages), the château Cantemerle was allowed to appear as a fifth classified growth in 1856. Today the château belongs to SMABTP (Mutual Insurance Building and public works), who took it over in 1981. On a constant level, this wine has always been an excellent value, with prices still very accessible for a “cru classé”. A new start has been made recently and this wine, one of the most classic of the appellation Médoc, has now greatly improved in quality. The 25-year-old-vines are composed of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot. The wine of the château is made thanks to a rigorous selection during the assembly of the different vines, the rest is used for the second wine, Les allées de Cantemerle. |
